When the storm rolls in, cattle run with it. Buffalo run through it.
The principle behind how we show up when the work gets hard.
The story
There is a phenomenon on the American plains that has shaped how we built this firm. When a storm rolls across the prairie, cattle do exactly what you would expect. They turn and run away from it. They are afraid, the wind is at their back, and running with the storm feels like running to safety.
It is not. The storm is moving in the same direction they are running. By turning their backs and fleeing, the cattle end up trapped inside the storm for hours. They maximize the time they spend in chaos.
Buffalo do the opposite. They turn directly into the storm and charge straight through it. The discomfort is more intense. It is also much shorter. By running toward the storm, they minimize the time spent in pain.
That is the principle. We are buffalo, not cattle.
How it shows up in the work
Most financial firms want clean books, cooperative clients, and predictable engagements. We were built differently. The work that other firms politely avoid is the work we do best.
- We take on the messy books. The chart of accounts that has not been touched in years. The reconciliations that nobody knows how to start. The historical data that needs an audit before it can become a foundation.
- We sit in the hard conversations. The one where you tell your team that things have changed. The one where you tell your bank what is actually happening. The one where you tell yourself that the way you have been running the business has to change.
- We do not slow-walk bad news. If something is wrong, you will hear it from us first, in plain language, with a path forward attached.
- We do not retreat to email when the client needs us in the room. If the situation is acute, we are in the seat that day, not next quarter.
- We turn down work we cannot do well. Stewardship requires the discipline to walk away from engagements where we cannot deliver the outcome we promise.
What it asks of us
Buffalo Culture is not a marketing concept. It is a discipline that costs us something. The engagements we take on are emotionally heavier than the engagements other firms accept. The clients we work with are sometimes the ones nobody else wanted. The work occasionally involves walking away from clients who want us to tell them what they want to hear instead of what they need to know.
We accept that cost because the alternative is being a firm that exists to be hired, not a firm that exists to make a difference. We were not built for that.
If your situation feels stormier than your last firm could handle, that is the conversation we are built for.
